AMSE Fellow Membership – Nomination & Selection Process

1. Eligibility Criteria

A candidate for AMSE Fellow must:

  • Be an AMSE Member.
  • Have demonstrated outstanding and exceptional engineering accomplishments.
  • Have made significant contributions in one or more of the following areas:
    • Engineering research, innovation, or patents
    • Technical leadership or project excellence
    • Professional practice with substantial impact
    • Academic contributions or authorship of influential publications
    • Advancement of engineering education
  • Have a documented career of at least 8+ years of professional experience.

2. Nomination Process

2.1 Initiation of Nomination

  • A nomination may be submitted by:
    • An existing AMSE Fellow
    • A recognized leader from academia, government, or industry (non-member allowed with approval)

2.2 Nomination Package

The nomination must include:

  • Nomination Form with personal and professional details.
  • Professional Contributions Statement (maximum 3 pages) describing:
    • Technical achievements
    • Leadership roles
    • Innovations, research impact, or contributions to society
  • Updated Curriculum Vitae
  • Two Endorsements, at least:
    • 1 from AMSE Fellows
    • 1 from an external senior professional or academic leader
  • Supporting Documents, such as:
    • Publications, patents, awards
    • Project reports or evidence of impact
    • Letters of appreciation or citations

2.3 Submission Window

  • Nominations are accepted throughout the year.

3. Evaluation & Selection Process

3.1 Administrative Screening

The AMSE Membership Office verifies:

  • Membership status
  • Completeness of documents
  • Eligibility criteria

Incomplete submissions are returned to the nominator.

3.2 Review by Fellow Evaluation Committee (FEC)

  • The FEC consists of 5–9 AMSE Fellows appointed by the AMSE Executive Board.
  • Each nomination is reviewed using a confidential scoring system based on:
    • Technical excellence (40%)
    • Professional impact (30%)
    • Leadership & innovation (20%)
    • Service to AMSE and engineering community (10%)

3.3 Voting

  • A candidate must receive at least 75% affirmative votes from the FEC.

3.4 Final Approval

  • Successful nominations are forwarded to the AMSE Executive Board.
  • Final approval is granted by simple majority.

3.5 Notification

  • Selected Fellows are formally notified by the Secretary, AMSE.
  • Fellows are announced during the Annual AMSE Awards Ceremony.

Article X: Fellow Membership

Section 1: Definition

The grade of Fellow is the highest level of membership within the American Society of Engineers (AMSE). It is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary engineering achievements, sustained professional excellence, and significant contributions to the advancement of engineering.

Section 2: Eligibility

  • A candidate must have been an AMSE Member.
  • The candidate must possess at least ten years of professional engineering experience.
  • The candidate’s accomplishments must be recognized as having exceptional impact at national or international level.

Section 3: Nomination

  • Election to Fellow grade shall be by nomination only.
  • Nominations may be submitted by AMSE Fellows or qualified Senior Members.
  • Each nomination must include:
    • A completed nomination form
    • A statement of significant achievements
    • A minimum of three endorsements
  • Self-nomination is acceptable with support of referral letters.

Section 4: Evaluation and Election

  • All nominations shall be reviewed by the Fellow Evaluation Committee (FEC).
  • The FEC shall evaluate candidates based on:
    • Technical excellence
    • Professional leadership
    • Contributions to engineering education, innovation, or practice
    • Service to AMSE
  • Election requires a minimum of 75% affirmative votes from the FEC.
  • Final approval rests with the AMSE Executive Board.

Section 5: Rights and Privileges

  • Use the title “AMSE Fellow (FAMSE)”.
  • Receive formal certification and recognition.
  • Serve on special committees and advisory panels.
  • Nominate future candidates for Fellow grade.

Section 6: Revocation

  • Professional misconduct
  • Ethical violations
  • Actions damaging to the reputation of AMSE
